Expedition 401
IODP Expedition 401 offshore drilling took place from 10th Dec 2023 – 9th Feb 2024.
An introduction to Expedition 401
IODP Expedition 401, which took place from 10th Dec 2023 - 9th Feb 2024, marked the first leg of drilling for the IMMAGE project, recovering sediments from 3 offshore sites, surrounding the Straits of Gibraltar. The expedition was conducted by the JOIDES Resolution Science Operator (JRSO) as part of the IODP. Expedition 401 included 26 scientists from 11 countries, with expertise in a range of geoscience disciplines. While at sea, the JOIDES Resolution laboratory infrastructure was utilized for intensive sampling and investigation of the cores retrieved. This included splitting, describing, and analyzing the cores, with data to be made available to non-expedition scientists after a one-year moratorium. Data from these core samples will be used by scientists all over the world.
